The Best of Sixpence None The Richer

It’s sad to see such a great band retire. In the past few months, I’ve really come to appreciate Sixpence None The Richer and their unique style. Matt Slocum’s introspective writing with Leigh Nash’s expressive voice is such a perfect combination. I really wish that this would just be a pitstop, rather than an ending to their career; however, I wish them best of luck in the rest of their endeavours.

This compilation CD has eighteen tracks, which is a great deal for $16. I only have their two latest CDs, so I didn’t end up with too many overlap songs. However, listening to some of their older songs really make me want to hunt down their previous albums. I like how there is such an interesting mix of songs on this album. There’s everything from power pop (”Kiss Me“) to angst (”I Just Wasn’t Made For These Times“) to worship (”Brighten My Heart“) to a cover of ABBA’s Dancing Queen. And there’s even a Japanese version of Kiss Me.

I’m more used to Sixpence’s ambiguous lyrical style, so it was surprising to hear honest, straightforward songs like Brighten My Heart and Trust. I’m not normally a big fan of the “worship” genre, since most of the songs tend to sound the same, with slightly reworded sentiments, but I love these songs. It’s nice to hear a band that can pull off a variety of genres, yet stay true to their own unique style.

My heart is as dark as the soil
Sodden with winter rains
Lord, brighten my heart
My soul is as heavy as the peat
Freshly dug from the bog
Lord, lighten my soul
My thoughts whirl like willow branches
Caught in autumn wind
Lord, still my thoughts
My body is as tense as cat’s
As it stalks its prey
Lord, relax my body

Help me open my heart to you
Help me open my heart to you
Help me open my heart to you, Jesus
It’s what I long to do

hmm..yeah. i like this song :) simple, straightforward [like you said], and sweet.

these lyrics are growing on me.
sixpence none the richer, eh? hmm…maybe i’ll check them out next time. [yeah, too bad about them retiring then.]

Yeah, this song is nice. :) We might do it at SJ on Dec. 3, though I’m not sure if it’s going to fit in with the other songs. We’ll see how it goes. :)

Oh yeah, I’ll probably go to Auntie Libby’s piano recital. However, I’m just going to wait at UBC until it starts, since my lab finishes at 4pm. I don’t usually get home until at least 5:30pm, and I’d have to leave again at 6:30pm to get to the recital on time. :P Maybe if you and some other people come early, we can all have dinner together! (That way, I don’t have to be alone for four hours. ;))

yeah! i think that’d be great. my lab finishes at 5 on tuesday…but sometimes we go overtime…it depends. so i’ll be staying at school too. where do you want to meet?

Maybe I’ll just meet you wherever your lab is? I can just stay outside and work on my laptop while I wait for you. Do you know who else is coming? Yay! I don’t have to be a loner! :P

sure, my lab is in the bio building…uh. i think it’s 1517? i can’t remember! haha. but it’s the hall past all the bio140 classrooms…2nd last classroom (not door) on the right if you’re entering by the entrance closest to the bookstore. but i can meet you just somewhere in that hallway?
hehehe at the loner comment :P.
i’m not sure who else is coming…christine lowe thinks she’ll be able to make it too. :D

Sure, I’ll wait for you in the hall. :) I’m sure I’ll find you somehow. Would you happen to know how long the recital is?

Haha, no problem. Thanks for inviting me! I can understand why you were sleepy in the car ride home… spending ~16 hours at UBC can do that to a person!
